Essay for "Outside" exhibit, August 2004

I explore landscape painting as an opening for personal escape as well as a setting for visual experimentation. It has been a wonderful challenge to explore different forms of the landscape and the subtleties of my experience within it. I think the work in "outside" represents more tradtional approaches to imaginary scencs, whether it be an open field or a simple garden that seems like it could exist anywhere. Like all my paintings I want to express an emotional response to light and atmosphere that gives a place a sense of surrealism. I think as adults we view and experience things differently than when we were children. Its a lot easier for a child to be overwhelmed by the mystery and ambience of the outside world, without experience or the understanding of why it does what it does. But as an adult we can appreciate the land when we feel the consistency of time and memory passing away and when the outside world offers a glimpse into timelessness. It is both of these sentiments that inspire my art. When the landscape is idealized and rearranged it offers a balance between nostalgia and fantasy.
