Michael Mathews was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He studied art in Minneapolis where his creative efforts were focused on mixed media works while taking classes in design, printmaking, and illustration. Towards the end of his college career he decided to return to straight painting with an emphasis on landscapes. Since then he has found inspiration in not only the places he sees or imagines but also anything that attracts his attention.

“As an artist my approach to painting is based on and motivated by a set of simple ideas and principles that are personally developed, as well as ones that find their place in traditional and contemporary art. For me, creating a painting is a personal balance between the release of energy in expressive brushwork, texture and color as well as using elements of light, atmosphere, and design to create places that are eloquent and calm. This mode of creation allows direct physical involvement in the act of painting as well as mediation, reflection, and escape.”
